The Westinghouse Undergraduate Fellows Program - FAQ

Who should apply?
If you have an active interest in research in the nuclear field and want to experience the challenge and excitement of a career in research, then we encourage you to apply. You should also be ready to have a fun and memorable summer enjoying all that Penn State has to offer!
You must have completed your sophomore year of study in order to be eligible to apply.
You must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, physics or chemistry with an interest in the nuclear field.
You must have a minimum of a 3.00 GPA, and an official transcript is required.
You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Will I get paid?
Yes! As a fellow, you will receive a very competitive and attractive compensation package. In addition to the $6,000 stipend (before taxes), your housing will be provided. Additionally, there is a $300 travel allowance available to assist in your relocation to Penn State. All activities and field trips related to the program will also be covered.
Where will I live?
You will share an on-campus apartment with other undergraduate summer researchers of the same gender. You will have your own bedroom and will share a kitchen and common area with three other students in a Nittany Garden Apartment. These apartments are well-located, on public transportation routes, and close to everything that Penn State and the State College area has to offer!
What are the requirements and work schedule?
You are expected to be on campus and working a regular 40-hour per week schedule during the 10-week span of the program. Your time will be divided between work on your research project, attendance at site visits, and participation in scheduled seminars. Also, you will enjoy social and recreational activities with your group. At the end of the summer, you will be required to give a presentation at a research symposium for the program as well as submit a short paper on your research. You will receive much assistance to help you complete these tasks successfully.
What will I learn?
You will work with a faculty mentor and pursue investigation into varied areas of the nuclear field that could include: Reactor Safety Research, Reactor Core Analysis, Particle Transport Methods and Application, Advanced Control, Radiation Monitoring and Instrumentation, Materials Research, and Reactor Thermal-Hydraulics Research. Additionally, there will be regular seminars held that will cover technical topics that will strengthen you academically, as well as professional development topics such as scientific writing and presentations that will give you valuable skills that you will utilize throughout your career.
How do I apply?
Please submit the online application, arrange for two letters of recommendation to be submitted online (click here for the recommendation form in PDF format), and submit a PDF of your university transcript. All application materials MUST be received by February 15, 2019. It is recommended that at least one of your recommendation letters come from faculty members, an adviser, or an internship supervisor who has worked with you on a design project or in a research setting.
How do I submit my official transcript and recommendation letters?
You should provide your two recommendation letter writers with this recommendation form (click here for the recommendation form in PDF format). Your recommendation writers should submit their completed form (and any additional pages) to the online application documents submission site. Forms and additional pages should be submitted as one PDF. You should submit your transcript to this site as well. IMPORTANT: These materials must be received by February 15, 2019, in order for your application to be complete and eligible for consideration.
