Dr. Stephen J. Piazza
Dr. Stephen J. Piazza, Associate Professor of Kinesiology with a dual appointment in Mechanical Engineering, authored the cover story of the October issue of Mechanical Engineering magazine, a publication of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
The story, with a focus on bioengineering, examines the way athletes accelerate while running to deduce more about the way all people walk. Learning more about the way musculoskeletal structure affects mobility could have a significant impact on the ways reduced mobility in older adults is treated.
Dr. Piazza’s research centers on development of computational tools for investigation of joint mechanics, computer simulation applied to the study of normal and pathological human gait, mechanical effects of surgical procedures intended to alter joint and muscle function, and mechanics of total joint replacements.
