Three mechanical and nuclear engineering students named marshals for 2017 commencement

4/17/2017

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Three students in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering have been selected to serve as student marshals for the College of Engineering’s May 5 spring commencement. College of Engineering student marshals are selected for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to engineering student life.

Siyuan Chen will represent mechanical engineering. He will receive a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He has chosen professor Liming Chang to be his faculty escort.

Chen is the son of Yufeng and Guangyu Zhang of Zhumadian, China. He is a 2013

graduate of Zhumadian High School.

His academic honors include the President’s Freshman Award, the President’s Sparks Award and the Evan Pugh Scholar Award (junior and senior year).

He was the team leader of ME 340 junior design project, which won 2nd place.

Following graduation, Chen will pursue a master’s degree in mechanical science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Joshua Larimer will represent nuclear engineering. He will receive dual bachelor of science degrees in nuclear engineering and mechanical engineering. He has chosen Arthur Motta, professor and chair of nuclear engineering, to be his faculty escort.

He is the son of Kirk and Mary Larimer of Venetia, Pa. Larimer is a 2013 graduate of Peters Township High School in McMurray, Pa.

A Schreyer Scholar, he completed an undergraduate honors thesis titled, “Characterization of Horizontal Two-Phase Flow via Flow Regime Identification and Frictional Pressure Loss Analysis.”

His awards and honors include the Brennan Excellence in Nuclear Engineering Award, the Penn State Schreyer Honors College Academic Excellence Award and Dean's List.

He was the recipient of the Brennan Excellence in Nuclear Engineering Award, H. A. Everett Memorial Scholarship, Louis A. Harding Memorial Scholarship, and the Penn State Schreyer Honors College Academic Excellence Award.

Larimer gained extensive work experience while attending Penn State. As a technical intern at Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation (now the Naval Nuclear Laboratory,) he performed two-phase countercurrent flow limitation analyses. As a mechanical engineering intern at Hardesty & Hanover, he helped to design a rehabilitation project for a Fort McHenry Tunnel fan actuator. While serving as a technical draftsman at Jennison Quality Components, he reverse-engineered parts for pharmaceutical encapsulating machines.

Larimer also served as a grader in a Nuclear Engineering 310W course for two years.

His extracurricular activities included club floor hockey, Springfield THON Special Interest Organization, American Nuclear Society and Engineers Without Borders.

After graduation, Larimer will join the Naval Nuclear Laboratory as an associate engineer and as part of the highly selective Engineering Leadership Development Program. He will rotate through various positions at the company and pursue a master’s degree in either nuclear or mechanical engineering.

Bryan Egner will be the student marshal for the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). He will receive a bachelor of science degree in nuclear engineering. He has chosen Lt. Col. Christopher T. Sebora, acting detachment commander, Air Force ROTC Detachment 720 and associate professor of aerospace studies, to be his faculty escort.

Egner is the son of Maureen and Walter Egner of Harrisburg. He is a 2013 graduate of Central Dauphin East High School.

His awards and honors include the Air Force ROTC Meritorious Service Award, American Legion Scholarship Excellence Medal and Dean's List.

He was the recipient of the Air Force ROTC Scholarship and was a member of the Alpha Nu Sigma honor society.

Egner won an honorable mention in the 2016 National Park Trips Photo Contest for his photo of a pack mule train titled, "A Daily Routine.”

While at Penn State he gained work experience as a global security and international safeguards intern conducting gamma ray spectroscopy and monte carlo modeling at the Idaho National Laboratory.

Active outside the classroom, Egner was a member of Air Force ROTC, serving as cadet wing commander in spring 2017 and as operations support squadron commander in fall 2016.

His extracurricular activies included memberships in the American Nuclear Society, Scabbard and Blade and Alpha Delta Phi.

Following graduation, he will pursue a graduate degree in nuclear engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology Graduate School of Engineering and Management.

About

The Ken and Mary Alice Lindquist Department of Nuclear Engineering at Penn State is one of the top ranked nuclear engineering programs in the United States. The department distinguishes itself with a strong focus on experimental research. The actively growing department leads four educational programs for students pursuing a bachelor of science, a master of science, a master of engineering, or a doctoral degree. The Radiation Science and Engineering Center (RSEC) facilities, including the Breazeale Reactor, are available to nuclear engineering faculty and students at Penn State for research and instruction. RSEC houses the Breazeale Nuclear Reactor, the country’s first and longest operating licensed nuclear research reactor. Having access to an operating research reactor is a key strength for the department and enables Penn State to harness research and educational opportunities that are unique in the United States.
